Reflections from Kristen: A CS BSW Student
THE SELFIE STICK MADE IT TO CHICAGO
Moving to Chicago was one of the bigger changes that I have experienced. I was SO nervous about what life would be like in a big city and if I could handle the drastic differences from my small-town life in Byron Center, MI. Little did I know that I would soon come to fall in love with this place and the people that I have met here.
My internship this semester is at New Moms Inc. Our staff works with young moms on finding stable housing, employment, and childcare in a way that glorifies the Lord and is sustainable for their lifetimes. It’s the best. I love what I do there. My supervisor, Dana, and coworkers are incredible women. I am constantly impacted by the gravity of the work being down there.
How lucky am I to wake up every morning and do something that I love that
helps other women get back on their feet?
The other perfect part about spending this semester in Chicago is the community that I am building here with the other students. We laugh and dance. We bake cookies and we play cards. We explore the city and spend a lot of time on the red line. We go on walks and we spend our Wednesday nights playing Bingo at McFadden’s. But mostly, we invest in each other. I have loved getting to know these people and learning so much more about this world through them and with them.
And the very best part about all of my new favorite friends is that they let me take my selfie stick with me everywhere and they’re never ashamed to look like tourists with me when I feel the need to take a picture (which is often). I’m pretty sure embracing my selfie stick is the way to win my heart. So that’s it folks, I’m enjoying Chicago. So much so that I’m applying for jobs in the area for when I graduate in December. So look out Chicagoans, my selfie stick and I might be sticking around for awhile.
